Mexico to free up 2.5 GHz band for LTE

Mexico has decided not to renew a swathe of existing 2.5GHz licenses. Communications and Transport Minister said this week that the spectrum will be auctioned off under the new conditions, reports Dow Jones Newswires (targeted for 4G/LTE).

There are 11 operators with current concessions in the 2.5GHz band, the largest being the media and communications company MVS Comunicaciones, which has 42 licences covering large parts of the country. Although several of the licences have already expired, some run until 2018 - and the government’s plan to seize the spectrum may also be delayed by legal action from the affected concession holders.
