4G Intellectual Property Royalties Set to Quadruple over the Next Five Years
Royalties raised from 4G cellular technologies in 2017 will be quadruple that of 2012, reaching over $6B in 2017. This correlates with the growth of 4G devices and is dominated by handsets. Just as the market for 4G royalties is taking off, Apple is entering the 4G market in a bigger way with its LTE-enabled iPhone 5. After being on the offensive with design and software patents, Apple may have to defend itself. “Samsung, Apple’s prime target because of its market share, is strong in 4G patents and will look to use that against Apple,” notes research director Phil Solis. “The only problem is that mobile technology patents for LTE are subject to FRAND rules.”

IRP: Apple 434 LTE patents vs Samsung 819
Apple has about 5% of all LTE patents - 44 of its own, the rest 274 from Nortel and Freescale. And Apple owns a majority stake in Rockstar Bidco, which holds another 116 LTE patents. Samsung holds 819 LTE standard patents. That could provide a layer of defence should Samsung decide to take Apple to court, but not clear if it is enough to defend Apple new products. \\slashgear.com

Samsung has promised to continue litigation with Apple over patents
Samsung plans to not only appeal the jury's findings of its willful infringements, but also to pursue new patent litigation related to 4G LTE networks.
Samsung control less than an eight percent of the patents related to LTE, with Nokia, Qualcomm and Ericsson accounting for 43%. However "it only takes one bullet to kill" - just a few standards essential patents can be use to successfully monopolize entire markets.
From the other hand Apple and Samsung are under investigation in the U.S. and E.U. for allegedky abusing patent law with regard to FRAND-committed patents.

LTE/4G patent pool is for sale
RSL Holdings Inc. toady announces the sale of "a seminal patent portfolio consisting of assets surrounding mobile network infrastructure technologies related to 4G/LTE and WiFi". Bids will be accepting until Sept.25 2012.
"The patents provide for both micro and macro "carrier class" network infrastructures capable of terminating voice and data traffic and their associated protocols at a central internet backbone access point, providing for all of the necessary transport and remote management capabilities to deliver fully featured voice and data telecommunications services. The patents in the portfolio were developed early in the 2000s and provide for wide-band, wide-area wireless systems which today are simply called "4G/LTE." \MarketWatch.com
