EC clears band1 for LTE refarming

Eurocomission has called on all EU member states to make 120 MHz worth of spectrum band1 available for 4G, such as LTE.

The paired terrestrial 2 GHz band (1920-1980 MHz paired with 2110-2170 MHz) has been traditionally used for 3G UMTS networks, but the EC now wants it to be liberalised for 4G services across the region.

The decision means it will be mandatory for EU member states to open the spectrum for 4G services by June 30, 2014. The EC said that it aims to provide harmonised technical conditions to avoid market fragmentation in the future use of the band.

O2 UK to challenge EE 4G launch

O2 UK parent Telefonica has written to regulator Ofcom threatening to challenge its decision to allow rival Everything Everywhere (EE) to launch 4G services this autumn, reports The Guardian. In the letter, O2 is thought to have given notice that it intends to appeal against Ofcom's ruling at the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT), potentially delaying EE's launch. Ofcom recently gave EE permission to launch 4G/LTE using existing spectrum, enabling to launch ahead of its rivals. //mobilebusinessbriefing.com

LTE in the 2300 (band 40) white paper

White Paper: LTE in the 2300MHz band Enabling Europe’s Radio Spectrum Policy Programme with the 2300 MHz band for LTE. Prepared by Huawei, June 2012, posted at GSA site.
To download it you have to be registered.

This White Paper encourages national regulators to define in 2012 a clear schedule for the release of this frequency band, as well as the adoption at the ECC level of appropriate deliverables to eventually harmonise the 2300MHz band for mobile broadband usage.
