Ericsson AIR 32 launched to boost mobile broadband coverage and capacity

However, existing sites can be full of equipment, introducing new units can increase site-rental costs, and regulations, zoning and permit processes can lead to long delays in the rollout of new sites.

To help operators overcome these issues, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announced the launch of AIR 32 - an innovative new addition to the AIR portfolio - which will be showcased during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 in Ericsson Experience in Hall 2 in Barcelona, Spain. AIR addresses operator challenges by allowing for the introduction of LTE and HSPA without requiring additional antennas or radio units to be added to network sites. The highly integrated nature of the AIR product portfolio enables a faster, easier, high-quality installation, which minimizes revenue losses and the need for additional site visits. In addition, AIR 32 allows multiple active frequencies in a single unit, enabling a further 50-percent reduction of radio equipment.

T-Mobile USA is currently using AIR in its ongoing network transformation program, and by doing so, it has experienced substantial improvements in ease of network deployment and performance.

The two most important network aspects for customer satisfaction are coverage and speed. Compared with existing AIR products, AIR 32 enables up to 70 percent higher throughput, substantially improving consumer experience of mobile-broadband services. This is achieved by enabling up to four simultaneous transmission streams, over the AIR 32 4x4 multiple-input, multiple-output configuration.
AIR 32 also offers up to 25 percent increased indoor coverage compared with existing AIR products. This substantially improves the reliability of indoor mobile-broadband services. Considering that an estimated 70 percent of all data traffic occurs indoors, improved indoor coverage is vital for an enhanced user experience.

AIR was first launched during MWC 2011 as the world's first solution that compactly integrates the radio unit and the antenna. Today, it is in full serial production, available in multiple versions and bands, and deployed at major customers in high volumes worldwide.

North America: LTE Adds 19 Million Subscriptions Year-Over-Year at 3Q 2012

LTE connections in North America rocketed to 22.3 million -- adding almost 19 million subscriptions in 12 months and representing 51 percent of all 43.7 million LTE connections worldwide at the end of the third quarter of 2012, reported 4G Americas, according to data from Informa Telecoms & Media. Another "billion" milestone is expected by the end of 2012, with all 3GPP technologies, including GSM, HSPA and LTE, comprising a massive subscription base of 6 billion and more than 90 percent of the global cellular connections. //marketwire.com

EC clears band1 for LTE refarming

Eurocomission has called on all EU member states to make 120 MHz worth of spectrum band1 available for 4G, such as LTE.

The paired terrestrial 2 GHz band (1920-1980 MHz paired with 2110-2170 MHz) has been traditionally used for 3G UMTS networks, but the EC now wants it to be liberalised for 4G services across the region.

The decision means it will be mandatory for EU member states to open the spectrum for 4G services by June 30, 2014. The EC said that it aims to provide harmonised technical conditions to avoid market fragmentation in the future use of the band.

Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs & Parrot: AR.Drone with 4G Dongle over 1000 m / 3280 ft record!

The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is many good things, but "long-ranged" isn't what comes to mind with a 165-foot maximum distance between pilot and quadrocopter. Not to be daunted, Alcatel-Lucent has conducted a test with an ad hoc LTE network, a USB modem and a smartphone to see just how far the remote-controlled aircraft could go on 4G. In practice, quite far: thanks in part to the inherently wide coverage of the 800MHz band in France, the team flew the AR.Drone more than 3,280 feet (one kilometer), all while streaming 720p video of the farmland below.
