Spanish cable operator ‘R’ trials innovative 4G services in Galicia using LTE solution from Alcatel-Lucent

Madrid, Spain, March 14, 2013 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), and Spanish cable operator Rhave conducted a trial of 4G technology advancing a further step for next generation entertainment and communication services such as on demand video, catch up TV and nomadic internet connectivity.

Licensed for 4G spectrum at 2.6GHz with 10Mhz bandwidth in 2011, R is analysing the full potential of new technologies to maximise its customer offer with this investment. Via groundbreaking LTE technology, Alcatel-Lucent is working with R to test the suitability of LTE in urban and semi-rural areas, for providing services such as business VPN and Internet access, residential fixed wireless access and wholesale connectivity services such as backhaul to mobile network operators.

Ericsson - 1st, NSN - 2nd in revenues from RAN LTE during 3q2012

Research firm Dell’Oro Group notes that NSN overtook Alcatel-Lucent in terms of LTE RAN revenues during the quarter. The vendor ended the period with 70 commercial LTE contracts, giving it a 21% share of total revenues – some four times higher than in 3Q11.

Ericsson remained the dominant vendor in the LTE market during 3Q12, while Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent shared third spot with an estimated 15% share apiece. //telecomasia.net

Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell Earns New Contract for Deployment of China Mobile's TD-LTE Trial Network

As per the new contract, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell is entitled to provide 3,000 base stations in the cities of Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao – three major economic hubs of China. China Mobile will utilize the Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative TD-LTE technology to launch new services in the cities early next year.

China Mobile will utilize Alcatel-Lucent ‘s complete end-to-end TD-LTE solution including radio access products – the Alcatel Lucent 9926 Digital 2U eNodeB, TD-LTE Remote Radio Unit (RRU) for the multiple spectrum bands being used by CMCC as well as core networking equipment, and the Alcatel-Lucent’s 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) network management tool.

China Mobile is one of the largest wireless operators with over 700 million subscribers, and now its Mobile's trial TD-LTE network is expected to cover a total of 13 cities to keep up with the soaring demand for mobile broadband access in China, which enables consumers to get unlimited access to video, gaming and other high-bandwidth applications.

Lately, Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile has inked a co-creation agreement in Shanghai to conduct a comprehensive trial of TD-LTE technology. In addition, both companies have also been developing and testing a series of lightRadio breakthrough technology elements.

Apart from that, both companies have also agreed to conduct joint nanocell research in China, put on paper after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Nanocells are a type of radio access technology that integrates wireless small cells with carrier grade Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) access points.

Alcatel-Lucent opens the doors for 4G LTE programmers

Alcatel-Lucent is making light easier for low-level 4G LTE developers by opening up a new suite of APIs.

Nine ‘New Conversation APIs’ are designed to give developers easy access to communication capabilities in service providers’ IP Multimedia Subsystem, the infrastructure that sits at the heart of 4G LTE and IP networks.

Specifically, Alcatel-Lucent claims that, "These capabilities include high definition voice and video, audio/video conferencing, interactive voice, messaging and call control, which can be used to build services for both consumers and businesses. ... To jump-start the developer ecosystem Alcatel-Lucent is leveraging its ngConnect program, which brings together service providers and apps developers as well as offering easy access to the APIs, along with a fast prototyping environment provided by the New Conversation API developer portal. These APIs are based on REpresentational State Transfer (REST), a popular, easy-to-use software architecture used to create applications for the Web."

Public Safety: ALU announced First Responder Video

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is to provide first–response emergency teams the ability to view and rapidly share multiple video and data feeds simultaneously on mobile devices. 

Fire, ambulance and police teams will be able to share critical emergency situation information with operation controllers via video and data streams – thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s First Responder Video solution. Building on Bell Labs research in multimedia and cloud, the First Responder Video utilizes 4G LTE mobile broadband networks to convey real-time video and information rapidly and cost-efficiently.

Sprint is using small cells provided by Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent says it has 39 commercial agreements to deploy small cells. The contract with Speint is the first when operator has gone public with its use of the vendor's lightRadio metrocells.

The equipment is capable of supporting 2G, 3G, LTE and Wi-Fi, but "this particular contract is specfic to the 4G LTE network". The idea of metro cells use is to be able to increase coverage and capacity where it's needed. There is no information, which markets would recieve the new equipment.
